5 Tips to Prevent Bruising From Dermal Fillers and Botox Injections

If you’ve noticed the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin, or that lately your skin has lost its fullness and elasticity, then you may be a candidate for aesthetic skin treatments such as dermal fillers and Botox® injections.

These therapies are established in the field as treatments that can turn back the clock and rejuvenate your skin.

If you’re considering exploring dermal fillers and Botox, it’s also useful to know how to prepare your skin for treatment, as well as aftercare to ensure the results are sparkling. John R. Fleming Jr., MD, FAAFP, is a skilled provider who is knowledgeable on delivering results for your skin’s appearance.

Dr. Fleming offers these five tips to prevent bruising from dermal fillers and Botox injections.
1. Avoid alcohol for 24 hours prior to treatment

Alcohol is a known vasodilator. This essentially means that alcohol causes your blood vessels to widen, increasing blood flow throughout your body. In practical terms, this translates into increased bruising following any sort of trauma, even the minor touch of a medical aesthetics treatment.

For this reason, we recommend that you abstain from consuming alcohol for at least 24 hours, if not longer, prior to your treatment with us.
2. Consider pausing medication courses that affect your blood

In line with avoiding alcohol, certain medications may have blood-thinning effects that also increase the likelihood of bruising. During your initial consultation, we discuss your medical history, including your current medications, and can advise you on which, if any, are safe to stop during the week of your procedure.
3. Reduce or mitigate herbal supplements

In addition to your regular course of medications, you may also be on a tailored herbal supplement regimen. However, many over-the-counter herbal supplements actually have specific effects on blood clotting and flow. These include:

    Vitamin E
    Fish oil
    Ginkgo biloba
    Omega-3 supplements

Our skilled team can provide you with specific recommendations on which herbal supplements are safe to take, and which are more likely to increase your risk of bruising.
4. Ice and lightly pressure the site immediately

One of the most important things to do to reduce the risk of bruising on your skin is to ice immediately once you arrive home. Plan on icing the area intermittently for up to 2-3 hours following your procedure, and continue as you can.

In addition to icing the area, research has also shown that applying mild, light pressure to the site can reduce the likelihood of bruising. Our team teaches you the right way to ice and compress.
5. No heat or exercise following treatment

For 48 hours after your procedure, try to avoid extreme heat, and don’t exercise vigorously. Heat and exercise can increase your blood pressure, which worsens current bruising and opens the floodgates for future bruises.

Following your procedure, engage in a couple days of rest and relaxation if at all possible. Our team also provides you with specific aftercare instructions to ensure that your skin heals beautifully.

Dermal fillers and Botox are a safe, effective way to smoothen and brighten your skin. If you’re ready to improve the appearance of your skin today, call or book online to schedule a consultation with Dr. Fleming at Palmetto Aesthetics and Wellness.

My sister has been talking a lot about Bernard's pictures and his special approach to every masterpiece he creates. It all sounded so interesting that I could not resist visiting his exhibition in Dallas 3 months ago. What I saw surpassed my expectations. James's works are really spectacular. If you live in LA, I recommend you to visit the upcoming exhibition in this city.

Great news! I visited the exhibition of Bernard's Art School in 2010 and it was spectacular. I was completely satisfied with what I saw last month in Miami at his art exhibition. You should definitely visit the upcoming one in LA, you won't regret!
